I like to take credit for 2 phrases:

Can't confirm or deny the Steely Dan connection, but GAS as it related to fanatical guitar buyers (vs. builders) is an OLD term. I've heard it for 15+ years.

Acoustic Guitar Magazine even has a monthly feature called "GAS Station." It's been around for quite a while.
