I like to take credit for 2 phrases:

1. WAS - Wood Acquisition Syndrome
Although I can't claim that I was the first to come up with it...who knows?

Serge, I think you have it mixed up. You DON'T want to be close to a person when you discuss your, whoops, gas. Oh, I get it, you weren't talking about proximity were you?

Can't confirm or deny the Steely Dan connection, but GAS as it related to fanatical guitar buyers (vs. builders) is an OLD term. I've heard it for 15+ years.

Acoustic Guitar Magazine even has a monthly feature called "GAS Station." It's been around for quite a while.
